Dan Miller

If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?Dan Miller

  • Bible my parents gave me when I turned 9 years old.
  • Wedding Ring
  • 30-40 Krag Rifle dated 1899 given to me by my wife’s Grandfather
  • Great Grandfather’s double bladed axe given to me by my dad
  • Grandfather’s International 886 tractor (Grandpa purchased new and my dad still farms with it)

Why did you choose that profession?

I was born and raised on a beef cattle farm and I have always wanted to be a farmer. My paternal grandfather farmed full time and milked cows for 50 years. My maternal grandfather always had a few beef cows and enjoyed showing at the county fair. Having experienced both as a young boy, I knew that I didn’t want to spend my life milking cows, so beef cattle seemed like a good fit for me. Having lived and worked on the sheep unit during college just further confirmed that the beef cattle industry was what I wanted to pursue as a career.

What is a skill that you would like to learn and why?

I love music, and have always loved the thought of being able to play the guitar. I have never given it the time required to learn, and with young children at home I don’t think I will start any time soon.

Describe a perfect day.

I have loved going camping my entire life and will go anytime that I get the opportunity. My children have also grown to love it. I also love Christmas, particularly Christmas Eve. I love the magic and excitement that my kids experience on that day. I love the songs, the scripture, and the pure innocence that kids bring to the season. So I guess my perfect day would be if it was warm enough to go camping on Christmas Eve! Smores beside the stockings, who wouldn’t love that?!

What does KALP XII mean to you?

I have great respect for the alumni of this program. It is an exclusive group of amazing leaders spread throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I am honored to be a part of such a group of people. My KALP XII classmates are now some of my best friends and they push me to be a better version of myself. I only hope that I can give back to the program that has given so much to me. I will forever cherish this experience and am honored to be a part of the KALP family.
